Debate on human genetic modification...

Here is a link to a debate on whether the modification of human genes should be pursued.

http://www.debate.org/opinions/should-the-modification-of-human-genes-be-pursued

These are some good answers as extracted from the debate above.

Yes:

The modification of human genes should be pursued responsibly. We are in an exciting time in human achievement. Breakthroughs in science are allowing us to live longer healthier lives. If gene modification can be used to promote health, I am for it. I do feel, however, that if it is used for anything else, then it will be a slippery slope into playing with things that we may not want to touch. It's worth it to treat life-threatening diseases, but if one wanted to do it simply to have a blond-headed, 6' male child, then the risks could outweigh the benefits. Superficial use of science always seems to come with potential risks.

No:
Human genes should not be modified because the long term effects are unknown could be harmful. The modification of human genes should not be pursued because it is unnatural, will not provide long-term benefit to the human race and goes against the entire circle of life and how the human race works. There has to be some limit to science, otherwise we will be tempted to modify the human gene to the point that life becomes a game in a sense to see how fast and how far we can go, without regard to the sanctity of life.

From this, I understand that there are two differing views on this situation and its depends on a person's point of view to decide which stand he/she would want to take. However, when I was reading through the responses on the debate webpage, I was wondering... Is it ethical for us to alter the course of nature just to benefit the future generations of humans to come?

  2. There is such a thing called genetic modification in plants and animals which will be able to increase the reproduction rate of the animals and growth rate of the plants. If deemed successful, this may be used in the future and would be able to solve many starvation problems and no human would be able to go hungry again.
Genetic Modification can allow one to live a longer and healthier life with less sicknesses. Living longer may not necessarily be better but many people would wish to extend their lifeline to complete many other uncompleted tasks they have.
Imagine yourself in the future on the verge of dying, wouldn't you rather wish that you had a few more months to live and enjoy life?

    1. I believe that the main focus of this article is on human instead of plants and domestic animal.I agree that some people wish to live longer to complete many other uncompleted tasks. However, there are also many people who misuse this technology. If Hitler have used this technology in order to live longer, what are the consequences? More Jews would be killed and there would be no justice and freedom for a longer period of time. It would only cause uncertainty rather than benefit the others.-Zhi Yuan

  3. @Zhi Yuan, I am saying that genetically modified plants and animals can benefit the future race of humans such that starvation cease to exist. I agree with you on the point that if this technology is misused, it would cause many undesired consequences. However, if this technology is kept under control of the authorities, it would serve many more good consequences such as making good leaders live longer. -Millie

  4. @Millie Do you really think that such undesired consequences could be prevented by authorities? The authorities might possibly abuse the power that they have and no one could stop them from doing what they want. For totalitarian society such as Germany in the past whereby Hitler gained power with the support of Nazi Party, I believe the local authority would not stop Hitler if he wants to abuse this technology. This can be proven by no one has succeeded in trying to stop him from all the undesirable things that he has done in the past such as all the experiments he has conducted in order to create a perfect human race. -Zhi Yuan
