Point of view from a blog writer:
Genetic Enhancement refers to the manipulation of genetic material to improve one’s talents and capabilities, or to have a child with desired traits. “Improving” future generation sounds like a really good idea! The only thing is this process isn’t cheap. Only the wealthy will be able to have their children genetically enhanced, therefore keeping and making the upper class even more powerful. In the current day United States the upper class already get most of the better opportunities in the world. The lower class has to work twice as hard to achieve the same things that the upper class gets more easily. If we invest in genetic enhancement the lower class would be at even more of a disadvantage than normal. A child from a lower or middle class family will stand almost no chance to an upper class child with genetic enhancements such as being smarter, healthier, and more attractive. This is only another way in which to keep people unequal. If genetic enhancement was something that could be of use to everyone to “improve” all generations to come then maybe this would be acceptable. The fact that genetic enhancement ensures that someone will be left behind makes it morally impermissible.
From this, I understand the writer's point of view as to why he objects to Genetic Modification. The main point in this article is that the writer is concerned that a person who is genetically modified (intellectually) have a advantage over other normal people. Having this, many people will be left to the lower rank while others who are genetically modified will always occupy the higher rank. Now, the point is should this point of view be accepted or is this simply a bias observation?

I feel that the price for genetic modification should not lowered. Firstly, it doesn't matter if the higher class have more ability than the lower class through genetic modification. As quoted from Einstein," success is 99% hard work and 1% genius". So it is only the attitude that matters, not aptitude. -Millie and Chloe
ReplyDeleteI feel that it does matter if the higher class have more ability than the lower class through genetic modification. As the Chinese says,"You cannot let the children lose at the starting line" It is indeed unfair for the children who get lesser advantage before they even start learning. In order to achieve the same achievement, those children from poor family has to work even harder compared to the past when genetic engineering has not invented yet.The rich has already gained much more opportunities compared to the poor as they could hire experienced tutors and get a good environment to study in compared to the poor who has to struggle to earn money in order to support their family while they are still attending schools. Those children from poor families could not afford to hire any tutor but struggle to solve their academic problems on their own and they cannot afford devices such as computers to help them in their studies.Human Engineering would only cause more challenge for the poor to succeed. They couldn't get success in their life even though they have already worked very hard due to these factors. -Zhi Yuan
ReplyDeleteAs said before, it is more of the attitude of the child that matters. Let's say that a genetically modified child is being modified to be more intelligent, but he/she doesn't have a passion in studying or is too complacent of his/her ability, the child will in the end still lose out to the poorer child who has a passion and will to study hard and get what he/she wants. Therefore, in conclusion, I feel that it is the mindset of the child that matters. The parents can push their child all they want to the extent of genetically modifying their child even before their child is born but in the end, it will all to boil down to the child himself to see if he decides to work hard and be what his parents want him to be or to be what he himself wants to be. -Millie
ReplyDeleteIf the child who are genetically modified has passion in learning, wouldn't it be unfair to let the child who are not genetically modified compete with someone who has more advantage than him? I agree that attitude do affect one's academic result, however,if both child( the one with modified genes and the another one without)have the good attitude,it would cause the problems that i have stated earlier.-Zhi Yuan
